Jack,

It is truly an honor to have you associated with this site! I remember watching your career with great pleasure. Your classic matches with Dory Funk, Jr. were some of the best technical wrestling bouts I have ever seen in my 30+ years in following this sport.

Welcome!

Hi! I have all of the negatives from Ruth Oman & Brian Berkowitz, two photographers who took pix mostly in Miami, West Palm, Ft Lauderdale, and occassionally other places. I have a lot of you. If you'd like, I'd be glad to send you copies. I'm not sure if you still have them or not. I hope all is well. I moved to FL in 1976 and have seen many of your matches. You were always one of the best and a true pro. Well, have fun, take care, and please keep in touch!

Pete

Hey Jack.....found your site through the Miami Herald site. I have been shooting photos for the PWI mags for about 21 years now and remember fondly the good old days when you wrestled in Florida and especially the times when you were WORLD champ and the "World title will be defended here in West Palm Beach next week, championship prices will be in effect" was announced at intermission and I, as a fan, was excited at the opportunity of photographing your match again. Pure entertainment, much different now. OH well. One of my favorite pix I have is you armdragging Harley Race in WPB. See Jerry every once in a while when WWF comes down here. What a great time I have had doing this for the magazines and you were one of my favorite workers of that era. Take care ,,, Duane

HI JACK!

BACK IN 1985 I MET NICK BOCKWINKLE AT AN AWA CARD IN NEW JERSEY, AND HE TOLD ME THAT YOU AND HE HAD WRESTLED BACK IN THE 70'S... I'VE BEEN LOOKING EVER SINCE FOR A COPY OF THE MATCH ON VIDEO, BUT NO ONE HAS HEARD OF IT... I'M LOOKING TO END MY SEARCH, AND HOW BETTER THAN AT THE SOURCE! ANY LEADS? LET ME KNOW...

THANKS!

Jack,

Congrats on the launch of your new website. As one of most talented and respected world champions to ever lace up a set of boots, the word "legend" describes very few people and you are certainly one of them.

I have been very priviledged with the opportunity to not only see you work while you were in your prime, but to enjoy a few laughs with you over a recent lunch with Brian Blair and Mark Nulty.

Once again congrats on your new site and if it is anything like its namesake, I'm sure it will have no problem in grabbing its visitor and snapping on the figure four.

Great information on Mr.Brisco!!!!!!!

I grew up watching Jack,he was the total package!

He will never be replaced or forgotten.

Comments

JACK,

I HEARD MY E-MAIL READ ON RINGSIDE LIVE... THE ONLY THING IS THAT I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHICH TAPES YOUR MATCH WITH NICK BOCKWINKLE WERE ON... THE HOST SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE TALLAHASSEE TAPES AND GEORGIA, BUT I COULDN'T MAKE IT OUT... I'D REALLY LIKE TO GET THAT MATCH ON TAPE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, AND ANYTHING YOU COULD DO TO POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

Jack,

Thanks for so many great memories. You were and are a class act. I am honored to have been a fan of yours and am glad that you are taking time to speak again after so many years of "retirement". It is great to hear you reminisce - brings back so many good memories of my youth in Florida.

Your wrestling skills were second to none and you brought honor and respect to wrestling. Take care friend.

hi mr. brisco, it is an honor! my uncle wrestled for the NWA from 1968 to 1971 as baron von heisinger and was on a few of the same cards as you in st.louis and had nothing but good things to say about you as a wrestler and a person.

Jack: Finally you have a website!!!I grew up in St.Cloud,Fl.Life for a young boy was so different back tne.Times were quiet and perhaps boring to a degree.I started watching Championship wresltling from Florida and like most other boys was enthralled with your abilitys. We all use to do the figure four in pe classes. This around 70 or 71.I was 13 then.I am soory to say when I started growing up in the mid 70s I quit watching.Other things took the place.I never got to the Orlando Sports Staduim for wrestling.I did for other events.I regret that I never saw you when you were the "Man"!! Your matches with Dory Funk Jr. were the best period. We always sat on edge hoping youd win the big one. I wish you ,Dory, and Harley would travel around Florida doing an evening with the greats type event. This on a pay per person say 25 bucks.Let me tell you it would sell out very quick. Thank you for hreat afternoons spent with heroes!!! We will never forget you. Please write a book next on your life.

Jack, i grew up watching you as the NWA world champ, I remember when you and Wrestling II were going to wrestle Ole Anderson and Ivan Koloff for the Georgia tag titles with Dusty Rhodes as the special referee and Koloff and Anderson attacked Dusty in the parking lot before the match and he crawled to the ring lauching one of the greatest feuds of all time (dusty and Ole). i also remember the great matches with you and JR. Funk and Baba, Dick Murdoch and Adonis and you and Paul Jones and Piper. thanks for all the hard work. i know that the travel peobably was brutal and sometimes you wondered if it was worth it. well from this fans view it definitely was appreciated! thanks Jack.

jack thank you for all the great memories. i would rate you as one of the top 5 in the all times.

You are without a doubt the greatest NWA champion of all time! Two years ago I called your auto body shop in Tampa and recieved an autograph picture of you and your brother Jerry with the Florida tag titles. Thank you! Also I thought it was great the way you respected the "10 pounds of gold", you always carried it with pride. To bad most of todays wrestlers dont handle the title belts with more erspect!

Jack You are truly one of the pure legends of pro-wrestling. During the early 70's you were my favorite wrestler. I also liked Billy Robinson of the A.W.A. because his style was so much like yours. It made my day when I heard that you won the world title from Harley Race [he never even got a chance to wear the new belt] ha-ha Take care Jack, and thanks for the memories.

I remember the Gordon Solie, Brisco's, Funks, and Race wars, along with the Melinko and Rhodes, Slater, Grahams and Shane and many other great ones from the Sportatorum, the Armory and the Bayfront Center etc.. what a pleasure watching and attending those matches now its just glitz and glamour..Thanks so much for the memories, it will never be another federation like it

Hello Jack. I have been a photographer mainly in Florida for PWI magazine for the past 21 years and still should have an assortment of photos from your matches in West Palm Beach. Would you be interested in using some on your site? All I would want would be a photo credit. Let me Know > Duane

Comments

Mr. Brisco, I had the opportunity to see you wrestle twice live and both times were in Tampa, Florida in July 1977 at the Homer Hesterly Aromory the 1st time you wrestled Harley Race for the NWA title and you got the three count and we thought you had won, but then the referee said you had been disqualified for throwing Race over the top rope. The second time a week later you and Jerry fought Mr. Sato and Saito managed by Mr. Hatori with Steve Keirn sitting at ringside. You and Jerry won I beleive by DQ when Hatori used the flag on one of you. Steve came into the ring to help and you guys made up as you and Jerry had started a minor feud with Steve and Mike Graham. I was tweleve years old and I was glad that I had got to see the Oklahoma Legend wrestle twice. The memories are fantastic. Thak you......

I came across this site by entering wrestlingclassics.com. I have to say that you along with your brother Jerry (or Gerald as they call him in the WWF) & the other legends like Ivan Koloff, Superstar Billy Graham, Ricky Steamboat, & the others were the best compared to this "junk" they are showing now in the WWF & WCW. I do remember when you & your brother had the feud with Ricky Steamboat & the late Jay Youngblood in the Mid-Atlantic division. This was the best division! By the way, they have a website: midatlanticwrestling.net. Now I have to go to all the wrestling websites & get all the legendary videos just to remember how wrestling used to be & how it should be. Anyway, thank you for all the legendary battles & take care.

I heard on the radio interview that you did that you lost some tapes of your matches in a storm. I have a lot of your matches on tape and would be glad to make a copy of them for you at no charge. I believe when someone does a nice thing for you then you should return the jesture.

Thanks, John

Dear Mr. Brisco:

It is indeed a thrill to be sending an e-mail to my all-time favorite professional wrestler and one of my top sports idols.

As a teen-ager and wrestling fanatic growing up in Florida in the 1970s, I had the privilege of watching you in action on numerous occasions in Melbourne and St. Petersburg. Those exciting matches are some of the favorite memories of my youth.

My young friends and I often would wrestle each other in junior high gym class, and when it came time to pick a favorite wrestler to portray, I would always proudly introduce myself as "Jack Brisco, two-time NWA Heavyweight Champion!"

Years later as a newspaper reporter and editor, I had another thrill when I spoke to Jerry by phone about an upcoming WWF event in Fort Pierce when he was the Tampa promoter. He was gracious, helpful and kind, a true gentleman!

I hope that you and Jerry are well and that you are enjoying retirement. How's business at the paint and body shop?

In closing, I'd like to say thanks for the wonderful wrestling memories you've given me and so many of your fans around the world.

Sincerely,

Mike Gaffey Melbourne, FL

I still remember your loser- leave town match with Mr. Ito.It broke my heart when the match was signed for I knew you were headed for the big time and was glad we got to to see you for awhile. The title belts today are a joke for they change every other week. Dear Mr. Brisco,

First, I'd like to thank you for all the years of pleasure that you gave me during your wrestling career. Growing up in Florida, I spent many an afternoon listening to the late Gordon Solie calling your matches. I don't know which was better, your wrestling, or Mr. Solie's commentary.

It was also my pleasure to see you wrestle many times at the Eddie Graham Sports Stadium. In fact, I was there one night when you and Ric Flair wrestled a one hour match....INCREDIBLE!!! I never like to compare any generations wrestlers to another, but I don't think that we would ever see anything like that in today's business.

I understand that you are outlining a book and are taking suggestions on what we would like to see you talk about in it. My suggestion would be your observations on Gordon Solie. It always seemed like you two had a special relationship. It always appeared like he held you as a "wrestler's wrestler". While Dusty Rhodes may have been the biggest "personality"...you were by the far the best mat technician in the game at the time. So, I'd like to read about some of the old Florida wrestling stories...with special emphasis on Gordon Solie.

Thank you again for all the great memories.

Sincerely, Dave Logan

Jack,

I was a fan of yours when I was a kid growing up in Houston, Texas (early to mid-seventies). My dad used to take me to watch you wrestle at the Sam Houston Coliseum (Paul Boesch's Houston Wrestling). I was always proud of the fact that you won the N.W.A. title from Harley Race on my 9th Birthday, Friday, July 20th, 1973. One time my mother took my brother and I back near the dressing room to meet you. I do remember that you very polite, although I didn't speak much as I was in a state of shock and in awe of getting to actually meet you. My mom got a picture with you and my brother and I gave you a christmas card, for which were thankful. I remember hanging a portrait of you on my bedroom door. Somewhere along the line I lost a special edition program (poster included)commemerating the night that you won the N.W.A. title. I remember your matches in Houston as outright classics (vs. Jose Lothario, Mil Mascaras, Dory Funk Jr., Superstar Billy Graham and many others). I don't follow wrestling much any more. A wild brawl is fine, but I really appreciated the tactical scientific wrestling that you others of your generation would display. The thing that I remember most about your wrestling was how much effort you put into making each match a great one. Thanks for the memories and please write if you get the chance.

Your Fan for Life,

Curtis Holland.

In my oppinion you are the best wrestler there ever was and ever will be. You and your brother are the greatest. By the way do you have a daughter? I ask because there is a girl at my school that has the last name of Brisco, and I no that she is not Gerald's daughter.

Dear Mr. Brisco: First off, I'd like to say it's a real thrill to be able to sign the guestbook of my first sports idol as a youth. I was curious about your shocking heel turn back in the mid-70s when you and Jerry battled Bob Backlund and, I believe, Mike Graham, for the Florida tag team belts. Was it difficult emotionally to hear boos from fans both young and old who had always cheered for you and your brother in the past? I distinctly remember an issue of "The Wrestler" where you mentioned how you respected heels for their courage because they would enter arenas where their lives might be in danger from some deranged fan. Did you ever feel threatened or worry about being attacked by fans during your heel turns? Thanks again for adding so much entertainment and excitement to my childhood. May God bless you and your family. Mike Gaffey Melbourne, FL

Hello Mr. Brisco. I'm only 20 years old, and even though I've never seen you wrestle that much, I try to keep up on my NWA title history and a good amount of the former champions. I was wondering if you're going to put out your best matches (including NWA World Title defenses and tag matches)on DVD for all wrestling fans to see in high quality video and audio to be sold in stores or mail order. I would be interested in seeing you in action and also showing other wrestling real old school, entertaining technical wrestling that is lacking right now in the mainstream. Also, where exactly in Tampa is the Brisco's Body Shop? Maybe one day, I could stop by and get a picture with a former NWA champion.

Comments

Hey, Jack. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great memories when I was a kid watching you wrestle on Championship Wrestling from Florida. I used to love watching you feud with wrestlers like the Funks, Harley Race, Pak Song, Paul Jones, etc. (By the way, whatever happened to Pak Song?) Wrestling was really something back then. I think some of today's bookers should get a collection of some old CWF tapes and watch them so they'll come up with some interesting booking. Pass that suggestion along to your brother so he can pass it on to the McMahons, okay? Anyway, thanks for the great memories. By the way, Skip Gossett (a.k.a. Skippy Jackson, Eddie's brother) lives in my home county. I need to call him one day and talk to him about some old matches.

I just wanted to stay I became familiar with you in the early 70s when you came to wrestle Jerry Lawler in Memphis. Ever since that day I have followed your career. I just want to say that you will always be one of the 10 best wrestlers in wrestling history to me.

I remember you only to well. I used to drive you back and forth to and from the airport in Savannah. Do you remember that? It was around 82-83. I even cross stitched a picture with your's and Jerry's name and it had a Number 1 on it. Hope you are doing well. I see form below that you have at least two grand children. That is great. Wrestling just isn't the same without you in it. I can sure tell you that. WWE is coming to Savannah on July the 7th. I am planning on taking my son and one of his friends. Boy do they think I am great since I know you, Jerry and Ric. I pulled out my old photos the other day and showed them. You would have thought I was the star then. Anyway Thanks for the memories. I think of you often. Take care. Stephanie

Hi Mr. Brisco... I am working this weekend with your brother Bill...being a long time fan, just think of how thrilled I was after learning his true identity. We talked a lot about you and the old times...(i was the kid that carried HIS robe many of times back to the dressing room)... So, how are things going for you?...looking at all the pics on your site brings great fond memories back to me. I just wanted to thank you for being one of the nicer guys to look up to growing up. You know, Bill looked a lot bigger when I was 10 than he does now...lol. By the way, although Jerry is making tons of money in the WWE, ask him not to kill the great "Brisco" Image by acting like the goof ball for Vince like he was doing a couple of years ago. Take care Jack...I hope all is going well for you and i hope we can at least be pen pals.

Aloha Jack! The first time I ever got to see you wrestle was in a tag team match with your brother Jerry on the old Georgia World Championship Wrestling with Godon Solie. I was fascinated how you and Jerry mixed alot of your amateur wrestling with the pro style. Especially when you did one of your signature moves "the fireman's carry" takedown. As Gordon Solie put it "you are the past master of the fireman's carry takedown." Congadulations on a fine career (from NCAA to NWA World Champ). You are a class act. Mahalo, Christopher Lewi

Jack: Thanks for many great wrestling memories. Back when you were still wrestling, wrestling was just different than the garbage that the WWE produces today. Though I miss seeing you around, even in a backstage role, I'm kind of glad you are not involved with that mess. You are still the greatest pro wrestler of all time as far as I'm concerned. It was more of a regional promotion driven business back in the 60's and 70's, so when you came around to my area (Richmond, Va), it was a big deal. Saw you defend your title against Johnny Weaver one night in the Richmond Arena (building is torn down now), and I was probably one of maybe 10 in the whole building rooting for you. Why in the heck they let Terry Funk take the belt from you, but never let you beat Dory Jr. is beyond me. Well anyway, you'll always be my favorite, and wrestling will never be what it used to be in the days of you, Wahoo, Valentine, Flair (in his prime), Steamboat etc. I hope your health is doing well these days, as I heard not too many months ago you were having some health problems. Good luck and God bless in all your future ventures. Bob Evans Richmond, VA.

Greetings from Orlando, FL. You are one of my all-time favorites. I remember watching you wrestle Dory Funk Jr. in the Jacksonville (FL) Coliseum back in 1970. You had him in figure 4 the last 90 seconds of a one hour time limit match - but he wouldn't give up. I believe this was right before you did finally beat him for the NWA Champ title. (on the lighter side...)I do remember the time when the Good Doctor & the Medics shaved your head on Championship Wrestling from Florida. Thanks for all the great memories!

Mr.Brisco, I have been a wrestling fan for 30 years now.Having grown up in New England,I never got a chance to see you compete until about 1984,but around 1974 I had pictures of you on my wall that I'd cut out of the various magazines of the time.My rationale was,"He's the world champion,so I guess that he's the best";after spending the last 15 years or so collecting video tapes,I can see that I was right.Thank you so much for all of the fantastic WRESTLING matches. My favorites that I've seen are the tag matches with Steamboat and Youngblood, and undoubtedly the matches with Dory Funk Jr.,which in my opinion are the measuring line for all professional wrestling. All that I feel really came close is the Flair-Steamboat series. In closing,I hope that you are enjoying life after wrestling, and thank you for the memories. You'll always be "The Champ". Sincerely, Pat Crocker Newport,R.I.

Jack, I have never met you but I believe you were married to my cousin Sandy of Florida. Her mother's name would be Connie, and one of her brother's name is Vince. I found a photo of you in the ring the other day and that led me to the internet where I found your website. My son is a big wrestling fan and found it neat that at one time you were in our family. You were definitely one of the best. Sandy
